Google TV revamp said getting better UI, speed

Allusions to an upcoming Google TV revamp were supported Friday afternoon by a rumor of what the refresh entails. The at times slow platform should get faster with a new chipset, presumably a newer Atom. SAI also understood from its source it would involve the long-delayed third-party app support and a better experience, although the definition of this wasn't given....

Make a dual-partitioned HFS+/FAT32 drive play nice with Windows

This may be evident to some people, but I was a little surprised that my first attempt at it failed.

If you ever want to divide a drive into two partitions, one formatted as Mac OS Extended (HFS+) and the other as FAT32, and to be able to access the FAT32 partition from Mac OS X and Windows, just make sure you set the FAT32 partition as the first one on the drive when you partition it with Disk Utility.

To be able to use it under Windows, you also have to make sure the partitioning scheme is set to Master Boot Record (MBR).

If you set the HFS+ partition as the first one, Windows won't be able to see the FAT32 partition and will tell you that the disk has to be formatted.

I tested this with a USB flash drive under Windows 7 Pro and under XP Pro, and both only recognized the FAT32 volume when it was the first one.

I did not test this with a hard drive, with a different bus than USB, or under Windows Vista, but I assume these cases follow ...

iPad 2 Even Better Than the Original

In USA Today, reviewer Edward Baig argues that the ?slimmed-down iPad 2? makes what was already ?splendid? even better, citing ?headline additions? of front- and rear-facing cameras with FaceTime and PhotoBooth, a ?snappier? Apple A5 dual-core processor, and ?really cool? Smart Cover. Baig calls the new GarageBand and iMovie apps for iPad ?a bargain for would-be rock stars and would-be Spielbergs.?

Sources 'confirm' Apple purchase of iCloud

Apple did in fact buy the iCloud.com domain name from Xcerion, say sources quoted by All Things Digital. Although initial word of the deal came in Thursday, its state was described as uncertain at the time, and iCloud.com is still technically registered under Xcerion's name. The ATD sources have declined to say whether or not the alleged $4.5 million pricetag is accurate....

Apple: white iPhone 4 delay due to longevity, sensors

Apple Senior VP of Worldwide Product Marketing Phil Schiller in an interview on Wednesday partly explained the reasons behind the 10-month delay for the launch of the white iPhone 4. Confirming many of the earlier suspicions, he explained that there were issues with how the white material's performance "holds up over time," including its resistance to UV rays from direct sunlight. He explained to AllThingsD that there were more immediate issues with sensors that also prevent a straight-ahead color swap....

Catalog your CD collection using iTunes

Have you ever wanted to catalog your CD collection in a searchable database but didn't want to shell out the $30 to $40 some cataloging apps cost? You don't have to spend a cent. Everything you need is already on your Mac.

Begin by creating a destination folder with a clever name. I came up with 'CD Collection.'

Get a stack of your CD's and open iTunes. Put a CD into your drive. If the contents of the CD don't appear as a playlist in iTunes, click on 'Advanced' and select 'Get Track Names.' You need to be online and iTunes should then get the track information from Gracenotes.

Next, click Edit » Select All. Right Click in the blue highlighted area and select 'Copy.' Open TextEdit and right click in the white area. Select 'Paste.' Close TextEdit and save the file with the artist's name followed by the album name, like this:

Various Artists_My Big Mix 2

Move the text file you've just created to your CD Colle ...
