Apple Closing on LG for Title of Third Largest Mobile Phone Vendor With 142% Growth

Research firm IDC today released results for global mobile phone sales for the second quarter of 2011, showing strong growth for Apple as it sits firmly in fourth place and closes quickly on LG in the race for third place among global phone vendors.
Apple maintained its number four position overall but closed the gap on Top 5 competitors thanks to another record unit shipment quarter. The company easily posted the highest growth rate of the worldwide leaders despite the fact that its flagship iPhone 4 is now more than a year old. The triple-digit shipment volume growth allowed Apple to more than double its share when compared to the same quarter last year. Apple?s ability to bring its smartphone momentum to developing economies, where it?s less successful, will help dictate the company?s smartphone fortunes in future.
Apple's share of the global market grew to 5.6% after hitting the 5% milestone last quarter, and grew up over 140% year-over-year against the backdrop of a market that grew by only 11.3% overall.

IDC within the next few days should be breaking down the data to reveal results for smartphones specifically, and while Apple has been reported to have passed Nokia to become the world's largest smartphone vendor, some analysts have suggested that Samsung may have ridden Android's popularity to even stronger growth that may have allowed it to surpass Apple last quarter.

10.7: Some Mission Control tips

On Lion, Expose and Spaces have received a major overhaul in the form of Mission Control. As usual they have included some nice subtleties in the way you can interact with it.

All the following tips apply when you already are in Mission Control and are from the perspective of someone not using gestures (no trackpad or Magic Mouse).
  • You can use the Spacebar on a selected window to Quick Look its content.
  • You can change the selected window (the one with the blue border) by using your mouse or by typing the beginning of the title of this window.
  • You can enter the 'Application windows' mode by hitting Command+`.
If you keep on hitting Command+` you will traverse all the open windows of an application for all the open applications on your system. Even applications with minimized windows are included.
Note that Shift+Command+` doesn't take you in the reverse direction.
That's it.

TUAW's Daily Mac App: Moonlight Mahjong

Moonlight Mahjong

There are few games quite as relaxing to play as Mahjong solitaire. Moonlight Mahjong is a great free solitaire game for the Mac, that's tuned for using a trackpad.

Not to be confused with classic game of mahjong, Mahjong solitaire is a tile matching game where you're presented with a pile of tiles taken from mahjong (hence the name), with the task of matching pairs to whittle down the pile. The tiles are stacked on top of each other, making only a limited number available for matching at any one time.

Moonlight Mahjong gives you the choice of four different playing modes: Scramble and Challenge modes, where you compete against the computer, aka "Tilebot" to clear the board; Puzzle, which is classic mahjong solitaire without Tilebot; and finally Relaxation, which is like Puzzle mode but there are no time limits and your tiles are automatically reshuffled.

The 3D tiles give you a bit of depth perception, while the pile is displayed atop one of its gorgeous backgrounds. You've got the choice of some beautiful Hubble images, paintings or photos, while the sound effects have a wind-chime style to them. Having come from iOS, the developers have given the game a touch-like feel by implementing decent multi-touch trackpad controls. You can select a tile by just lifting your finger off the trackpad, while you can move the pile about with standard gestures (pinch-to-zoom etc).

Moonlight Mahjong looks great, plays well and adds a little competitive element with the introduction of your Tilebot playing partner. If you're looking for a relaxing game for your Mac and like matching tiles, the free Moonlight Mahjong is definitely worth a look.

Apple Extends iTunes Previews to 90 Seconds Internationally

Apple seems to have extended iTunes song previews to 90 seconds internationally. Apple first rolled out 90 second previews in the U.S. back in December, 2010. International song previews had been stuck at 30 seconds.

According to a number of reports, the new preview lengths are available in at least Canada, Australia, New Zealand, UK and parts of Europe. As with the U.S. launch, not all songs will have 90 second previews.

In the U.S., Apple had made the change unilaterally in an email to labels telling them that they would automatically extend previews from 30 seconds to 90 seconds in the iTunes Store in the U.S. It's unclear what was the reason for the delay for international markets.

Motorola Mobility had a bittersweet second quarter as an independent company with improving results but a sign that Android tablets weren't faring as well. It improved its losses and only shed $56 million versus $81 million in the winter. Its phone shipments were also bouncing back, with 11 million cellphones trading hands and 4.4 million of those being Android smartphones. New Glendale, CA Apple Store to boast unique features

Yesterday we told you that this Saturday will see the opening of Apple's second Glendale, California store -- one that is only 600 feet away from the other Glendale store. If that alone isn't enough to give the first store feelings of inferiority, perhaps the features of the new store will push it over the edge.

According to 9to5Mac, the new Glendale store will feature a floating Apple logo suspended in the store's glass front. This is the same treatment New York's Fifth Avenue cube store got. The second Glendale store will also have a massive Genius Bar -- a full fifty seats. In addition, the new store will feature a briefing room for business customers and a few tables dedicated entirely to Startup Sessions. To top it off, at 7000 square feet of retail space, the new Glendale store is Apple's largest store in a mall.

Apple is definitely an out with the old, in with the new company. However, at least they decided not to shutter the existing Glendale store. Though it was the second Apple store in the country, I'm sure it's got many years of life left in it. Then again, reports are that it is so busy it could be in business for some time.
