10.7: Remap Dashboard to LaunchPad on an older Macbook.

I wanted to see if I could remap my dashboard key to LaunchPad on my pre-Lion MacBook. Here's a fairly easy way to do it.

Install KeyRemap4MacBook (it's free) on your computer. In System Preferences open the KeyRemap4MacBook pane and select Misc & Uninstall.

Select Open private.xml and then edit the revealed file to contain the following text:
 <?xml version="1.0"?> <root>     <item>       <name>Map Expose All to F18</name>       <identifier>private.expose_all_to_f18</identifier>       <autogen>--KeyToKey-- KeyCode::EXPOSE_ALL, KeyCode::F18</autogen>     </item>     <item>       <name>Map Dashboard to F19</name>       <identifier>pri ...

Steve Jobs reportedly tried to defuse the Samsung issue in 2010

Apple and Samsung butted heads in a Sydney, Australia courtroom on Thursday; arguing over an injunction that could ban the sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet. During the proceedings, Apple executive Richard Lutton revealed that Steve Jobs contacted Samsung back in 2010. The Apple CEO reached out to the Korean manufacturer because of the "deep relationship" between the two companies. Jobs tried to head off any legal action by giving Samsung a "chance to do the right thing."

In the past year, Samsung and Apple have had a rocky relationship. Apple obtains several key iPhone and iPad components from Samsung and is one of Samsung's biggest customers. But the two companies are fierce competitors in the both the smartphone and tablet market. It's this competition that's the source of their legal wrangling.

Apple kicked off the legal battle when it filed lawsuits in Germany, Australia, South Korea, Japan and the US that accuse Samsung of trademark and patent infringement. Samsung responded with its own series of patent infringement lawsuits. This tangled web of legal proceedings is slowly making its way through the courts.

Follow-up: Polish iTunes Store now live

After a bit of a false start in the initial hour, the Polish iTunes Store -- at least the music portion -- now appears to be operational, according to a MacNN reader report. Reader Adam S. was able to purchase a copy of the Black-Eyed Peas' latest album from the store, which uses Euro pricing of .99 € (approximately $1.35 US) per song and around 10€ ($13.50) per album, according to a report from Polish site MyApple....

Quora debuts first app for iPhone, iPod touch

Question-and-answer website Quora has launched its first-ever app for the iPhone and iPod touch. The title serves a similar purpose to the Quora website, letting people ask their own questions, answer others, and root through a database of existing topics. A distinguishing feature is the addition of Nearby, which places topics on a map, letting people read or respond to questions about the things around them....

Physical Mockup of 'iPhone 5' with Tapered Design

Although hope for the redesigned iPhone 5 seen through third-party case designs is waning as evidence continues to stack up for the "iPhone 4S" design and no sign of the larger, tapered iPhone 5, that hasn't halted interest in the iPhone 5 design.

And while we took a stab at some renderings of a potential iPhone 5 based on the case designs, benm.at has now taken things a significant step further and created a physical mockup of the device.
Based on CAD designs, hardware components, several leaked hints, cases and recent, believable mockups we created a three-dimensional computer model. This virtual model was then used to build a very detailed, true prototype that you can hold in your own two hands.

The process to create this prototype is the same that?s used to create the iPad. The back was machined from a sold block of aluminium, which was later treated with glass pearls to get the same slightly rough touch that we already know from the iPad.
The mockup offers an excellent view of what the rumored iPhone 5 design might look like, and while the actual device may not be making an appearance next week, it is possible that the design may have been from a prototype that Apple could be working toward for a future generation of the iPhone.

iLuv WorkStation dock is for serious iPad typists

I'll be brutally honest: The iLuv WorkStation doesn't exactly win a lot of points for beauty -- it's a bulky device, as you can see above. But what it's lacking in subtlety, it tried hard to make up for in functionality, basically turning your iPad (or Samsung Galaxy, if you happen to swing that way) into a full-sized desktop computer. Plug the iPad in, and you get a tilting and rotating bracket, a keyboard (different models run with a connected or wireless Bluetooth keyboard), and a full set of speakers.

If you need a dedicated station for your iPad, this doesn't look like a bad choice. Just make sure you have plenty of room on your desk. The models run from US$50 to $180, and all of the units are available on iLuv's website right now. Expect them in retail stores later this month.
